description: Our Maywood Rolling Wheels Club will ride to Wheaton (via the Illinois Prairie Path.) Oct 18th to meet & listen to Dr. Glennette Tilley Turner discuss the history of the Underground Railroad in Illinois. Dr.Turner is a resident of Wheaton & a respected historian about the Underground Railroad. We will meet on the front lawn for a history lesson about the Underground Railroad legacy in DuPage County & Cook County (Wheaton College, Maywood, etc..). Dr.Turner's new book, "A Man Called Horse," is now available. The story is a daring account of a Black Seminole warrior, chief, and diplomat, John Horse and the route he forged on the Underground Railroad to gain freedom for his people. Dr. Glennette Tilley Turner is 91 years young and has written nine children's books, including "Fort Mose," "An Apple for Harriet Tubman," and "Running for Our Lives." She has also written collections of biographies of notable African Americans for adults, and she serves as an advisor to the National Park Service, where she helps plan programs for the national historic Underground Railroad trail. Dr. Turner invited us when we met at the Operation UpLift INC. WEST TOWN Museum's Juneteenth event this year. BTW - Dr. Glennette Tilley Turner 92nd birthday is Nov 23rd. It's not often that we're blessed to see and learn from her, so if you want to present her with a gift, it's certainly allowed. Dr. Turner will have her books to purchase. Our host is expecting us at 5:00 p.m. Distance: from Maywood One way: 13 miles Round trip: 26 miles Travel Time: 1 hour and 11 mins (one way. Breaks not included). We will have little kids rolling with us so we will take up to two breaks to hydrate. Departure: 3:30pm Return: Depends on our stay with Dr. Turner. Be prepared for possible night time riding.
